About This Study
Not a language to memorize — a key to timeless wisdom
Sanskrit — Saṃskṛtam, meaning “refined” or “perfected” — is the classical language of India’s entire knowledge tradition. The Vedas, Upaniṣads, Bhagavad Gītā, Yoga Sūtras, and the great epics are all composed in Sanskrit. Without access to this language, these texts remain at one remove — understood only through translation and commentary.
This three-level program offers a structured, unhurried path into Sanskrit — from the Devanāgarī script and foundational grammar at Level 1, through complex sentence construction and text reading at Level 2, to independent engagement with classical philosophical texts at Level 3. Each level builds naturally upon the previous, ensuring genuine understanding rather than rote learning.
Program Structure
Three levels of progressive study
Each level stands complete in itself while preparing you naturally for the next. Choose your entry point, or commit to the full three-level journey.
The foundations of Sanskrit
Level 1 is a complete introduction for those who have never encountered Sanskrit. You will learn to read and write the Devanāgarī script, understand fundamental grammar, and begin constructing simple sentences all without prior language background required.
By the end of this level, you will be able to read simple Sanskrit prose, understand basic shlokas, and have a clear grammatical framework to support further study. This level makes rigorous classical learning genuinely accessible.
Building Grammatical fluency
Level 2 deepens and extends what was learned in Level 1. Students develop the ability to read more complex Sanskrit passages, work with all verb tenses and moods, and begin engaging with classical texts such as the Bhagavad Gītā and Yoga Sūtras.
This level marks the transition from learning about Sanskrit to actually reading in Sanskrit. Grammatical forms become familiar tools, and the student gains the confidence to approach scripture directly.
Independent engagement with classical texts
Level 3 equips the student with the grammatical and vocabular foundation required to read classical Sanskrit philosophical texts with genuine independence. The Upaniṣads, selected Vedic hymns, and advanced philosophical prose become fully accessible.
By the end of Level 3, you will be equipped to read, translate, and reflect on Sanskrit texts with the support of a dictionary alone — the traditional mark of classical literacy in the Sanskrit tradition.
